Wood Buffalo is home to an energetic and vibrant arts and culture scene. With a strong discretionary income residents are interested in pursuing entertainment options similar to what is found in larger centres, and several facilities provide those experiences. As the community continues to grow there is room for expansion in that scene, and in the inevitable spin-off businesses such as restaurants and lounges. Wood Buffalo residents want to be entertained – and they want to find world-class entertainment right on their home stage.
Keyano Theatre presents four theatrical presentations yearly, and hosts several smaller events throughout the year, hosting productions with everything from musical performances to children’s programming included in the mix.
Wood Buffalo has become a city of festivals, with four annual events organized by Events Wood Buffalo, winterPLAY is a celebration of the north with everything from dog sledding to independent theatrical performances, while interPLAY is the summer version, focusing on larger theatrical performances, live music, street performers, and a marketplace. The Canada Rocks music festival welcomes the summer months over the Canada Day weekend, and the Big Spirit Festival on Labour Day weekend closes out the summer months.
MacDonald Island Park has become the venue for outdoor and indoor concerts from rock to country and everything in between, and with a planned expansion including an outdoor stadium that can hold 20,000 spectators will have the capacity to host world-class performers.
The recently opened Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts has been host to some community firsts, including the inaugural Fort McMurray TEDx conference and the first performance of opera via “Live from the Met”. It is sure to become home to many other similar events.
