In 2015, Wood Buffalo will play host to seven provincial, national or international sporting events, attracting the eyes of the sporting world and spotlighting the region’s spirit. Mayor Melissa Blake has declared 2015 “The Year of Sport” in Wood Buffalo.

“Wood Buffalo has a history of hosting sporting events, but this year is looking very exciting,” said Mayor Melissa Blake. “We have provincial, national and international events coming up in 2015. The eyes of the sporting world will be on us throughout the year. Our state of the art facilities will be on display, but more importantly our tremendous community spirit will be in the spotlight!”

The first major event is the March 5-7 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Championship, hosted by the Keyano Huskies at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre, and will be followed by the Grand Slam of Curling Syncrude Elite 10, the 2015 Tim Hortons Canadian Ringette Championship, the 2015 Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup, the Northern Kickoff presented by Shell and two FC Edmonton soccer games. Capping the Year of Sport will be the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games, Aug. 7-16.
